Do you have aRts installed?  libartskde updated?  Since aRts HEAD started 
requiring glib, things have been shifting around.

The best bet I've found to get things to work is to use aRts from 
ARTS_1_1_BRANCH, fix the libartskde configure check to require 1.1.x, and 
then things work.
