Right.

But, the hilighting is still buggy and distracting.  An off button would 
be so choice.

What would be ideal in my eyes would be one ispell process per instance of
konqy, and that ispell process would be idle until the text is changed
(launching an ispell on focus would perhaps make selecting awkward).

Have I mentioned the off button yet? :) :)
