KParts::saveFile (so in this case KateDocument::saveFile) should provide 
appropriate feedback to the user. You may want to use KIO::buildErrorString() 
and the error codes defined in kio/global.h to set a standard error string in 
KateBuffer::saveFile() I guess you were about to add some error reporting 
function to that class anyway.

I will update the KParts docs to mention this.
