Your patch reverts the security updates which lead to KDE 3.1.1a (from 3.1.1).

As Waldo says however, gs should be able to find its fonts. According to  
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/gnu/7.05/Language.htm , the .locksafe 
command should allow gs to read the paths contained in /FontResourceDir and 
FONTPATH. Therefore, this seems like it might be an instalation problem where 
you have gs malconfigured (in particular /FontResourceDir is not being set 
right).

Maybe adding a couple of directories to your FONTPATH evnv var would fix the 
problems you are seeing.
