You can't protect from root. If you try that, you have not understood 
Unix.

You can, however, (try to) prevent the passphrase from being written to 
disk by swapping. Memory can effectively be wiped. Disks cannot. What 
was written to disk can still be recovered after hundreds of 
consecutive writes.
