waldo was working on the background dialog, and a few days before the msg 
freeze sent me a new version that was half finished but a large improvement 
over what is in CVS UI-wise. he couldn't finish it since he was moving and 
asked if i could look after it. since then i've been battling with various 
computer issues that have made hacking impossible and so haven't gotten it 
completed either. 

personally, i'm with rainer in that the old version should probably be 
reinstated for 3.1 and the version that waldo was working on can be finished 
for 3.2. it is indeed a large improvement over what was there previously and 
over what is currently in CVS, but is probably too late to complete it with 
respect for the freezes.
