Test if X MouseKeys works with the usual activation method:
Shift-Numlock.  Using a stock Mandrake X11 here.

And btw, my setting doesn't seem to persist for the next reboot.  Nor
does turning off "apply fonts and colours to non-kde apps".  They look
fine in the Control Center, but are't applied at the next log in.
