one other thing that just ocurred to me: if a user select Custom from the menu 
and then the panel just sits there, how obvious is it to them that they have 
to drag the panel to resize it? probably not very since there is no resize 
thumb on the panel... 

just another reason to offer a dialog to allow panel resizing. =)

/me goes back to making the panel resizable based on size setting, not pixel 
size
