I also noted that there is a lot of flicker as soon as keramik is enabled, 
e.g. when I select a different newsgroup in knode the knode menu flickers a 
few times which is rather odd. selecting a different newsgroup shouldn't 
cause a menu repaint, should it?

Opening the KMenu (or other menus) also flickers, as if the menues where 
redrawn multiple times.
