this makes sense. i'll implement it in the next day or two. 

as for the changing UI arguement (which those on the usability list will know 
i take up whenever apropos): the whole file dialog is a changing UI. 
sidebars, previews, filters, encodings, separate dirs .... all coming and 
going. so this isn't a change from the norm. and it won't occur mysteriously, 
since it will happen in direct correlation to the side bar being hidden.
