I have the slight impression that I goofed up majorly with this patch,
since a lot of post-commit fixing was needed to get it back to work :/

Hopefully this is the last issue. The patch looks ok. Please commit.

Apologies for the problems I caused. I clearly didn't test enough
situations. Next time I'll post the patch for review first when I finally
plan to commit, even though my initial post back in december didn't get
any response.
