It can be made highly consistent with the rest of Kopete by polling for a
user's presence and /msg-ing him like you send instant messages over other
protocols. Channel chats are just multi-user chats as in every other
protocol.
Except for the actual connection handling code that also means about 99% of
all IRC code in Kopete would be shared with the rest of the plugins.
Unfortunately Nick doesn't want to go that way, which leads to the current
'IRC feels out of place' issue in Kopete.
That said, Kopete's irc client is maturing pretty well. Why it is integrated
in Kopete instead of being an app of its own is still a miracle to me, but
that doesn't mean the thing itself is bad. Rather the contrary.
