What about an "open file once the transfer is complete" checkbox, then? Not to
say this would be a good idea (see below), but there is no need for a
checkbox and two buttons.

And that's a problem. Should cable users not get that option, because the
dialog disappeared too quickly? The current download dialog is confusing the
concept of a status dialog and option dialog, IMHO.
