Incidentally something similar, i.e. automatically combining the sheet
of paper with the application icon to build the corresponding mime
icon, is just being discussed on kde-artists (or was it kde-artwork).
So far most artists seem to be against this for various reason
(difficult configurability, suboptimal icons, etc.).
