Advice on setting up dev environment

Hi KDE Folks!

Can anyone share an advice/write up on how to set a productive environment for 
developing KDE apps?

More specific question:
- What IDE to use?
- How to arrange files on filesystem?
- how to make sure dev KDE Apps/Plasma setup does not mix up with installed 
stable KDE Apps/Frameworsk/Plasma setup? And how to switch between the two?
(I realise that there may be separate approaches for apps, frameworks, and 
plasma)
