    `CMAKE_C_SIMULATE_ID STREQUAL "MSVC"` instead of `x${CMAKE_C_SIMULATE_ID} STREQUAL "xMSVC"` should do the job, no?
    
    There are multiple other places in this patch where `${FOO}` could be replaced by just `FOO`.
