How is the variable used? If its used with install() commands then cmake
will prepend the prefix anyway. In particular I think this breaks
DESTDIR support (i.e. generating usr/xyz paths but putting them under a
different root dir).

Also a bit more explanation why you're doing such a change in the commit
message would be good.
