Agreed. In fact, in platforms where the linker doesn't support
--whole-archive, libtool actually does that: it links the objects
directly into the final shlib.

And that's exactly the kind of files that will have to be compiled
twice[1] anyways, so there's no point in having an intermediate target.
[1] if any of the flags change, including the -DMAKE_XXX one
