I did try your suggestion re comment #3 at that time but it failed. In any case
this problem still exists using kdebindings 4.4.59svn1074631. Do I really have
to wait until kde release actually says 4.4 before this gets fixed?

Yes I am aware this bug is marked resolved/wontfix, just letting you know this
is still borked. If you want a new bug report then say so.
