Yes, this is something I would like to change in kttsd. Currently clients 
can only pick a language, but they should also be able to specify which 
voice should be used.

The only think that bothers me is that implementing a complete XML based 
speech API would be duplicating a lot of work that went into gnome-speech 
drivers.

Bill, do you have any idea how it would be possible to bridge the drivers, 
and perhaps even make sure that the two services don't block each other?
