Philippe Fremy and I moved this discussion to the mailing lists where following patch 
comitted to CVS was considered a sufficient solution us as for now:

Please check it out, depending on the response I suggest closing this wish. Unrelated 
wishes like autoscrolling should be opened in separate wish reports.
