Hi
I am cleaning my harddisk and want this mail to be in the archive for
copyright reasons in case we will use the Stewart-table.

Dear Carsten: I like your Kalzium application. My design is copyrighted,
but I would be happy you to use it, provided it is not a high resolution
version that people could usefully download (I don't mind them downloading
it in a form that does not replace my poster). I have a mousemat version
for example that I could let you have.
The placing of the elements was carefully calculated so that the distance
between neighbouring elements would increase or decrease at the same rate as
the circumference of the coils. However, It was done by hand, and so it
retains a certain irregularity. That was deliberate, becaue I wanted it to
look like a work of art and not something mechanical. I curved the 'spokes'
that link the members of the groups partly for the practical reason that I
had to make more space for the lanthanides and transition elements, but made
harmonious by obeying the 'pull' of a notional 'great attractor' off to the
top right. I wanted it to be both art and science, as I don't see a
fundamental divide between the two.
As regards the text, as long as you acknlwledge my authorship I see no
problem. All good wishes, Philip

Hello Mr. Stewart
My name is Carsten Niehaus. I am the developer of a chemistry application
called Kalzium. You can find it's homepage at
http://edu.kde.org/kalzium/index.php.
It is a periodic table but has many additional features like a
spectrum-viewer. Like many other people I read about your way to organize
the elements. I would like to integrate it into my app as an additional way
to represent the elements.
Of course, I would need to know several things before doing so:
- Is it legal to simply add this view or is it somehow copyrighted? My
application is free and open software (licenced under the GPL), a legal
restriction would make it impossible to add this view.
- did you use some scientific process to determine the position of the
elements or did you just put the elements on the "galaxy" to make it look
aesthetic? I need to know this to be able to draw the view as close to yours
as possible.
- http://www.chemicalgalaxy.co.uk/ gives the viewer a short but good
description of what that view is all about. If I take this view into
Kalzium, may I use this text in the application?
Greetings from Germany,
Carsten Niehaus

Dear Carsten: You might make a new 'galaxy' of your own. I called mine
'Chemical Galaxy' not 'The Chemical Galaxy' because I didn't want to imply
that mine was the only way. How different another way had to be in order
not to infringe my copyright is not a question I have had to think about
yet. All the best, Philip

That would be very nice :-) I am not yet sure if I will "draw" the table (I
don't know how to call it, it is not a table, of course") or if I will use a
graphic for it. With the mousemat I guess I will be able to figure the
postitions of the elements out so that I can draw them myself.
A friend of mine is about to buy two posters and will give them to me in
September. I am looking forward seeing them in "real life". I am a chemistry
teacher and am looking forward to trying this new periodic table out with my
students.
Carsten

We talked about all this in our team. I think taking the picture you wanted
to send me (the "mousemat-version") is probably the best as your galaxy is
well known.
Therefore I would like to ask you to send me a small version of your galaxy.
I would display that version in Kalzium and make the elements 'clickable'
(an informationdialog like
http://edu.kde.org/kalzium/pics/screen3.png
http://edu.kde.org/kalzium/pics/screen4.png
would open). This would be an additional view, I would keep the regular table
as the default view. I would credit you in the About-Dialog, the webpage and
the manual, of course.
Thanks in advance,
Carsten

Dear Carsten: I attach the mousemat version and also the A4 version, which
is perfectly legible on screen. I'm sending the posters to Danny Allen for
you. All the best, Philip
