As requested, I tried burning a DVD-R again. The processes failed again (see
below).
Note that this time I asked k3b to only simulate the burning process (I was
curious to see what it did in this mode and possibly avoid destroying a DVD-R).
I am happy to try to burn a DVD-R for real if requested.
The software on my system has been updated since my last post but the hardware
is the same:
