[k3b] [Bug 236672] cdrecord has no permission to open device

I had to replace an old CD drive (USB external drive) with a new one (Roofull
ECD829-Y)
I uninstalled/installed wodim and k3b
"k3b" starts, writes something to CD (it's no longer blank), then stops with
that error message (screenshot attached).
    k3b: Version 17.12.3
    KDE Frameworks 5.44.0
    Qt 5.9.5 (built against 5.9.5)
    The xcb windowing system
