Hi,

the firmware change obviously had an effect on write speeds.

https://bugsfiles.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=106049
shows that the drive this time announced the ability for 6x speed,
got set to 6x, and in typical Constant Angular Velocity manner
accelerated from about 2.5x at the inner rim of the medium up to
5.8x at the outer regions.
That's what one can expect from nominal 6x on BD-R without
Defect Management.

So yes, the firmware upgrade made the drive's behavior somewhat
more normal.
