Crashing on Raspberry Pi 400

I just picked up a Raspberry Pi 400 mainly to have a safe/dedicated device
for my kid to run gcompris, but unfortunately it locks up a few seconds
after gcompris starts and I have to pull the power cord to reboot.  This is
a pretty vanilla installation, the only other thing I installed was the
raspbian updates.  Any idea what I might do to work around it and/or is
there any information I can provide to diagnose the problem?
