 From http://www.unicode.org/faq/utf_bom.html#37 , it seems that the max 
length of a UTF-8 char is 4 bytes, so we should be OK.  Makes me wonder 
where the 6 byte length came from since 4 data bytes + trailing '\0' 
makes 5 bytes.
