Gcompris works fine on my Mandrake 9.0. If during gnome releases bugs 
appear, I am not sure it is applications' role to correct core libs bugs 
(or we'll never end up with something stable and well coded).
IMO, such workaround patches should only be incorporated in case of a 
buggy distribution (not for a LFS bleeding edge).
Note that I have nothing against LFS :-)
