Seems this is a Debian bug, detailed at :
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=163253
Changing the /usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/pygtk.pth file accordingly
corrected the problem.
Now the python plugin works !
