 Ahhhh....I have libxml-1.8.16 & libxml2-2.4.13 installed.
 libxml headers install under /usr/local/include/gnome-xml with an
 encoding.h. libxml2 headers are in /usr/local/include/libxml2/libxml,
 also with an encoding.h.
 Linked libxml2/libxml to libxml and compiles except for docs, which I
 can take from rpm (I don't have texi2html yet).

 Looks like I'll be spared the Wrath of Emily and keep my job.
 In fact, after a quick lookthrough, I think she'll be very pleased.
