[gcompris-devel] Compile Problem

I am having a problem compiling GCompris. 
Versions:0.9.6, 1.0.0pre1, 1.0.0pre2
No errors from ./configure but make ends with:
gameutil.c: In function `parse_doc':
gameutil.c:393: structure has no member named `children'
gameutil.c:389: warning: `node' might be used uninitialized in this function
gameutil.c: In function `gcompris_read_xml_file':
gameutil.c:448: structure has no member named `children'
gameutil.c:450: structure has no member named `children'

Appears to me to be xml related.  I have libxml2-2.4.13,
gnome-libs-1.2.13, gdk-pixbuf-0.16.  I have no package named
gdk-pixbuf-gnomecanvas which is listed as a requirement
in the INSTALL file. All I can find is references to a Mandrake 
package, but no source package. I had no problems compiliing
an earlier version of gcompris (0.6?) on a less up-to-date
gnome with glibc-2.1.3.  (Now using 2.2.4).  System is 
LinuxFromScratch 3.0.

Any help appreciated, my four and a half year old daughter
wants to fire me and hire a new sys-admin.....
