Yes, it is annoying. I noticed this also today playing with my child to
gcompris. This board needs also to have color in the selected buttons on
the left.
I can handle that.

This one will be more complex to handle. 
GCompris is extremly stable on intel now. What version of gnome-libs to
you have.
There is a bug #53127 in the gnome bugzilla that could be releated to
your problem.
Can you try to do a back trace in DDD to have a better idea.
