I’m having some “issues” getting FreeNX to work with Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy
Salamander
[SNIP]

The console, usually . . .

. . . and running

Not usually a good idea . . .

Still running . . .

You need to find out how 13.10 X tells everything what its
 display is.

You may find that 13.10 doesn't use $DISPLAY

You should also check what your ssh session is choosing for its
display with -X ( X forwarding)

eg
         localhost:10:0
typically, NOT
         :0

Try
        echo $DISPLAY

What was the blah in

login to the NX server (ssh -X blah)
