Good to hear you got it working and it wasn't a server-side problem.
Note that you might also want to try x2go for comparison.  It is very
similar and shares some of the library code, but the clients are open
source too and it doesn't need an intermediate user to set up the
connection.  As of the 4.0.1.3 version it seems very usable.
