I use the gnome-fallback on precise and I like it. My goal is to use it on trusty.
Right now gnome-fallback doesn’t work on trusty because of a requirement test.
I removed the test and it started. I will try to figure out will they are requiring
composite for the fallback. Maybe because they rely on compiz/unity for background.
On a quick test kde4 worked with some glitches. xfce and lxde worked too.

Right. I'm not optimistic about being able to provide unity over freenx
in trusty. Our fallback plan is to use gnome-fallback for NX sessions.
Last time I tried that it still worked, but it was a while ago. I'll try
to find time soon to test it again, and post here if I learn anything.
Can you share any hints?
