Yup, but bear in mind that it's all (compressed) X, so you
need a full X server (client in normal-speak) at the
client end !!

Any such effort would be better placed replacing X with
something with

        security
        a more efficient protocol so start with
        WAN compression built in


Have a look around, you may be able to help out with 
such a project . . .
