I'm not quite sure what's happening on your machine
but
it looks like FreeNX is working ok
as far as the log is concerned

so


Start a FreeNX session as a normal user
( you say gnome starts up OK ) 

Try firefox in the NX session as a normal user

If it doesn't work launch a Gnome-Terminal in the NX
session.

in the NX gnome-terminal . . .

        echo    $DISPLAY
        xauth list
        firefox

Post what happens in the terminal.
