Sounds like a mess . . . 

What does :- 

        sudo find / -iname "libc-*" 

produce.



As a test, disable PAM in /etc/ssh/sshd_config


UsePAM no
PasswordAuthentication yes
        ( the default anyway)


And try a few FreeNX sessions . .
