That was the clue I needed.  Changing COMMAND_START_GNOME from the
default "/usr/bin/gnome-session" to
"/usr/bin/dbus-launch /usr/bin/gnome-session" in "node.conf" did
the trick.   I don't know why this is now required where it wasn't
before, but I note that other users have had similar problems in the
past.  I also don't know whether this is the "final" form of the
solution: I may end up adding other arguments to "dbus-launch" if
needed to make things exit properly when I end the session.
