Hi Freerk,

 After posting question I found that mathematica need special fonts
(supplied by WRI), which were fortunately being served by the font server on
the linux machine I was connecting to. I just asked NX client to connect to
the font server on port 7100 and it worked. Using local copy of fonts would
be fast, but I don't think WRI fonts are in nomachine's font package.
