If gnome works but kde4 doesn't, we should first exhaust simple
possibilities.
A good first candidate is
startkde
. . . which is why I asked about other versions ( or remnants ).
Do you have freenx configured to use "startkde" to launch kde in node.conf
or else what do you have?? (the distro may have updated this for
you)
Is this a link to another file ??
What do you execute when you run kde (from startx) without freenx,
eg. try
type -a kde kde3 kde4 startkde startkde3 startkde4
If you hit the configure button in the nomachine client,
go to the "general" tab, change the Desktop setting to
"Unix" "Custom" and Settings ( button )
change Application to "Run the following command" "xterm"
then when you connect you should get a running X session with an xterm.
Enter startkde, and you should see it try to start and then fail with
some error messages left on the xterm.
You might find a few windows opening up depending on how far it gets . .
