Sigh, this was an easy fix.
As per the No Machine knowledge base article on this subject I added the
--exit-with-session argument to dbus-launch command. Problem solved.

[FreeNX-kNX] FreeNX / dbus error
Hi all,
I'm running FreeNX under Suse Linux Enterprise Server (SLES 10 SP3):
NX-3.2.0-47.1
FreeNX-0.7.3-4.1
I need to know how to deal with the following error that I get when a user
logs into a session (Gnome):
"Power Manager - This program cannot start until you start the dbus system
service. This is usually started by your operating system by default, and
is normally called messagebus. It is strongly recommended you reboot your
computer after starting messagebus."
Everything works fine, this error just pops up every time a user logs in.
I tried setting the following in node.conf:
COMMAND_START_GNOME="/usr/bin/dbus-launch /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session"
The above change made the error go away, but a lot of these processes
(owned by the uid that was logged in) hang around after the user logs out:
test1 681 0.0 0.0 10332 904 ? Ss 09:12 0:00
dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 8 --print-address 6 --session
Any tips in dealing with this error message correctly?
Thanks,
-Matt________________________________________________________________
