Where did you get the nxlibs/backend from?
1) Did you compile it yourself? If so, then you probably haven't  
compiled in support for png in the libraries
2) How did you install the FreeNX server, via a package manager, or  
manually? If manually, did you do the gentoo-patch?

Please be more specific about your install environment.
