I'd suggest keeping those old keys and try renaming them instead of
deleting them.  People who have interdependent client keys with
authorized_keys files man need an interim solution to allow access with
the old keys to a separate daemon running on a nonstandard port.  These
options from the manpage of ssh might be helpful to explore this idea
further.

~   -h host_key_file
~   -p port
