Yeah ... Perhaps they saw no reason as xinit and kdm or xdm are all already suid root.

Oh, thank you very much for maintaining the packages. :-)
The init script I created does do one thing more namely to terminate and cleanup all sessions on shutdown and again cleanup all sessions on startup, which might be useful after a power outage.
