[FreeNX-kNX] How to debug: nxagent does not start. (Porting to FreeBSD)

Hello all,

I'm new to this list, and nx, and I still want to finish the port of nxserver 2.1 / freenx 0.6 to FreeBSD...

thankfully, Dewey Hylton did the hard work of getting it to compile. Still, it does not run: http://www.deweyonline.com/nx/freebsd.html

What does run? 
local nxproxy connections seem to work (nxproxy -C :1000; nxproxy -S :1000; set DISPLAY=:1000;xterm works fine), nxagent displays it's startup screen when startet locally.

What does not work?
Using nxclient 2.1, nxagent does not start, the session fails. I get a "unable to open display" error - does this mean nxproxy is not started?

So, my question is: how do I debug this further? I'm really not experienced in debugging this kind of network & bash / c combinations. Any tips, hints, recipes?
