Had the same problem today. KDE/Gnome setup tools for setting up fonts
like to write ~/.fonts.conf to assign RGB subpixel patterns to
fontnames (handled by fontconfig subsequently). Appearently nx doesn't
like that.

Removing
 <match target="font" >
  <edit mode="assign" name="rgba" >
   <const>rgb</const>
  </edit>
 </match>
from .fonts.conf solved that problem for me.
