Why on earth would you do it this way? Best way to get to the console is
to setup something like libxvnc.so and make sure that you can get to the
console by that means. Then install freenx on the server and configure
the client to connect to server. In the client settings, put in the
information for the server, (ip address, ssh port) the specify desktop
as VNC. Click the settings button, then specify localhost as the host,
then vncserver port. That will get you to your desktop, using nx
compression and technology for enhanced speed.
To the OP, what do you absolutely *need* to have running all the time
anyway? I used to feel that it was entirely necessary to have a running
desktop at all time, but there really are very few items that would
require it. If you're compiling or downloading, make friends with
"screen" and you can disconnect and resume xterm sessions all you want.
Try logging out when you done, then use NX's true desktop, then you will
really know remote speed.
