I suspect the problem was not the fedora version per se, but the 
CUPS upgrade from 1.1 to 1.2 (with the the assorted changes in the 
interfaces).

As I said... this is overriding the unix domain socket communication 
default, and it tells it to use TCP/IP socket.

So.... did you test what I adviced?  (I can't do it myself since I have
no suitable Linux system available to do this right now... Damned thieves!)
