[FreeNX-kNX] Proxying VNC, waste of time?

A friend's struggling start up is having trouble getting their OS X 
server to work properly.  I would like to help them work out the 
issues.  OS X uses a lot of open source stuff but relies heavily on the 
GUI and I just don't know if I can fix everything over SSH.  I don't 
have a server sitting here so I can't walk them through stuff I can't do 
over SSH.

The server is in germany and I am in the US, latency is going to be a 
huge issue with remote controlling.  I would like to set up a Knoppix 
FreeNX server to proxy their connection.  But I read that using it as a 
proxy eliminates almost all of optimization.  Did I misread it or would 
this be a total waste of time?

There is no NX servers for OS X afaik.
